If you are like me you have 1000’s of photos of your dog since they were a puppy until now. Ever since Bosco has been smaller than a ham, I have been snapping shots of him doing everything and anything. Bosco even perks up when he hears that little beep the camera makes when you turn it on. Now I think the pictures are great but if you ever want to take more professional shots, I came up with some tips to help you out.

The Bridge as Illustration of The Cross

The Bridge Illustration: An Idea Whose Time Has Come and Gone? 2


A few posts ago, I proposed that the way we evangelicals speak about and practice salvation forms us for moral duplicity, for moral schizophrenia, for believing one thing and doing another. Among other things, I said:
1.) Our way of salvation has no account of what happens with desire. Therefore our desires are left untouched by our salvation.
2.) We have separated justification from sanctification, something I called the Lutheranizing of our soteriology (this got some comments over at the much beloved blog: the Boar's Nest - my response to that is that I was not blaming Luther himself, who was living at a different place and time. Rather I was referring to the ways we evangelicals took later developments in Lutheran theology and crassly made salvation all about justification by faith in separation from sanctification. To me, this is so patently obvious that I still believe I need take no additional space to defend myself on this).
3.) This development opened us up to make salvation a transaction between two individual entities (God and humanity) as opposed to the participation of me, a human creature, in the work of God to restore the whole of creation to Himself out of which I as individual am also justified, renewed and reconciled to God.
4.) As a result, we are left passive, to receive God's great salvation is Christ almost as consumers. All of this works to separate our newfound salvific status in Christ from the outworking of a life lived as doxology to God in Missio Dei.
If any of this is not making sense, please read the prior post where I might have done a better job explaining all this. I closed that last post by saying that the classic Bridge illustration "illustrates" (no pun intended) some of these problems. Here's why.





The Bridge Illustration I think illustrates some of these problems with our ways of initiation.

First, the Bridge constructs a "contractual" transaction. We recognize our "need." We receive Christ as the "solution." Then the "benefit" of this salvation is described. Then there is an individual decision to "believe." At the conclusion, we pray this prayer which guarantees me of eternal life. Recent versions construct the need in terms of our broken relationship with God and the solution as a birth into a new relationship with God. This version of the Bridge has significantly improved prior versions like this. Nonetheless, it still has its patented "If you've prayed this prayer and are trusting Christ, then the Bible says that you can be sure you have eternal life."

What's wrong with the Bridge's "transaction" approach? It has the effect of initiating the unbeliever into a salvation "for me" in the worst sense of those words. For in a consumerist society, the words "for me" can longer mean what they meant when Paul spoke them or Luther spoke them. Consumerist society has trained all of us to think, feel and breathe all things as products to be consumed "for me." Jesus, Son of God, very God, has been reduced to an object to be used for some benefit. At this point this simply is no longer a salvation recognizable by Paul, Luther or the Christian church.

Granted, what the Bridge says is true. Yet it has abstracted this truth from the story, which makes it into a consumable. This is what Guder refers to as the constant temptation towards reductionism in the missiological efforts of the church. The church as a result must be continually converted. To me, it is safe to say, that time has already long since arrived.

Second, the Bridge separates justification from sanctification. Although improvements have been made in the recent versions of the Bridge, salvation is still considered static! The plus in recent versions of the Bridge has been that salvation is articulated in terms of one's relationship with God as opposed to the singular penal transaction so common before. Nonetheless, it remains individualized and static. The problem is separation from God. The solution is "bridging the gap" to God through accepting the cross's payment. This makes the relationship with God static, you either have it or you don't.

The effect of this static account of salvation is to separate life with God from the moment of conversion. After praying the prayer, we now have the relationship as if it is already accomplished. The relationship we have with God is like this Thing. And the directions we are asked to follow on how to live the Christian life appear to be hollow individual exercises that hopefully keep you on the right path. They are not written as invitations into an endless expansive life with God and His Mission.

Last, the Bridge Illustration takes no account for what happens to desire. To me this is the most condemning problem of all with the Bridge. It is like once we accept Christ's provision for sin and the separation from God, desire takes care of itself. We are now told to read the Bible as intake, talk to God in prayer, tell others about our new found faith and go to church and serve. These all appear to be individual exercises, which can easily turn into legalistic works to secure a life after conversion. But unless the re-formation of desire is addressed, these directions for life after conversion inevitably produce failed Christian life and moral duplicity.

At our church, the pastors and leadership have started a conversation on this issue. WE NEED NEW WAYS OF INITIATING STRANGERS INTO THE GOSPEL THAT TRAIN THEM INTO BEING PARTICIPANTS IN GOD'S MISSON AS OPPOSED TO CONSUMERS OF THE GOSPEL. WE NEED A WAY OF INVITING PEOPLE INTO THE COSMIC RECONCILIATION THAT GOD IS WORKING THROUGH JESUS CHRIST (not just a transaction), WE NEED WAYS OF IMAGINING THE ONGOING LIFE WITH GOD THAT IS MORE THAN ONE'S PERSONAL PIETY (although it must include that as well). WE NEED COMMUNITIES OF THE SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES for new converts to be invited into THE RE-ORDERING OF ONE'S BODY (soul and spirit) INTO THE GLORY OF GOD THE CREATOR AND REDEEMER.

On the next post, I hope to discuss my initial thoughts on this as well as what other people are coming up with as well. In the meantime, Do you think I'm overly critical of the Bridge? I could tell you endless stories of people converted through the Bridge at large church, mega church or evangelistic events who simply cannot cross the line towards life in God (and His Mission). Vừa qua một trận icestorm hú hồn hú vía. Chỉ qua một đêm mà sáng dậy tất cả mọi vật đều đóng băng. Cây đổ tứ tung và thế là mất điện, máy bơm ko hoạt động nên kéo theo mất nước luôn. Gần 1 tuần trong tình trạng thảm hại nhất từ trước đến giờ: ko có điện nên chả có gì làm, cứ vật vờ suốt ngày như mấy con ma từ sáng đến tối chờ người ta sửa dây điện cứu. Sáng quanh quẩn, đến xế xế chiều là chùm chăn đi ngủ được rồi vì tối mịt chả thấy gì. Nước không có đủ mà uống chứ đừng nói là tắm rửa giặt giũ: may mà phá băng moi được cái ô tô phóng vội ra siêu thị mà mua nước về. Trong 1 tuần đấy, dù tình huống bất khả kháng lắm mới phải chạy ra ngoài, thế mà cũng xòe mất 2 lần, tí què. Đi du học vui thật.

«نوغلام» و بشر!

آمریکا پس از بازکردن دکان فاشیستی «مردمسالاری دینی»، به صورت غیرمستقیم، در پی نابودی اعلامیة جهانی حقوق بشر، و تبدیل آن به اعلامیة جهانی حقوق دینی برآمده. البته این تبدیل «قانونی»، با همکاری سازمان ملل صورت خواهد گرفت! و طبیعی است که جهت پیشبرد چنین سیاست مزورانه‌ای نوکران فداکار عموسام در جمکران پیشقدم شوند. بی‌بی‌سی، مورخ 6 مارس 2008، به نقل از خبرنگار خود «فرانسیس هریسون» گزارش افاضات منوچهر متکی، وزیر امورخارجة گورکن‌ها را، پس از شرکت در نشست شورای حقوق بشر سازمان ملل منعکس کرده. مطالب ابلهانه‌ای که ایشان مطرح کرده‌اند، نه تنها نشانگر بی‌اطلاعی وزیر امور خارجة جمکران از متن اعلامیة جهانی حقوق بشر است، که حماقت جناب وزیر را به معنای واقعی کلمه نیز به اثبات می‌رساند. منوچهر متکی، مانند دیگر آخوندهای دین‌فروش، نمی‌پذیرد که بشر، صرفنظر از اعتقادات‌اش، می‌تواند «بشر» به شمار آید، و احدی حق ندارد اعلامیة جهانی حقوق بشر را به اعلامیة جهانی حقوق دینی تبدیل کند! چون چنین تغییر و تحولاتی، نقض آشکار اعلامیة جهانی حقوق بشر خواهد بود.

اصل 18 اعلامیة فوق در مورد آزادی بیان، آزادی عقاید و تغییر دین صراحت کامل دارد. این اصل بر «حق ابراز معتقدات» در سطح جامعه تأکید می‌کند:

«هر کس حق دارد که از آزادی اعتقاد، تفکر و دین بهره‌مند شود. این حق متضمن آزادی تغییر دین یا معتقدات و متضمن آزادی بیان و ابراز معتقدات به صورت انفرادی و یا جمعی در خلوت و یا در سطح جامعه است […]»

علاوه بر این، اصل 19 اعلامیة جهانی حقوق بشر، تأکیدی است بر «آزادی بیان بدون مرز»:

«هر کس حق آزادی بیان و عقیده دارد؛ به این معنا که بدون ملاحظات مرزی، از انتشار عقاید خود از طریق تمامی وسایل ممکن، نباید کمترین بیم و هراسی داشته باشد.»

و از همه مهمتر اصل سی‌ام اعلامیه جهانی حقوق بشر است که، تأکید می‌کند، هیچ فرد، گروه و یا دولتی نمی‌تواند با «تفسیر» اصول این اعلامیه از حق و حقوقی برخوردار گردد که نافی حقوق و آزادی‌های مطروحه در این اعلامیه باشد:

«هیچکدام از اصول اعلامیة حاضر نباید به گونه‌ای تفسیر شود که برای یک دولت، یک گروه، و یا یک فرد متضمن هرگونه حقی گردد که نافی حقوق و آزادی‌های مندرج در اعلامیه باشد».

ولی گورکن‌ها که از سه دهه پیش، با بهره‌مندی از همکاری «حقوق‌دانان» خودفروخته و سیاست پیشه‌گان شیاد جبهه ملی، نهضت آزادی و حزب توده و رفقا، از طریق تحریف «جمهور» و به اسارت کشاندن آن در زنجیر توحش «اسلام»، جمهور را از مفهوم خود تهی کرده‌اند، می‌پندارند در سازمان ملل هم می‌توان با حمایت آمریکا و شرکاء، به پدرسوختگی‌های آخوندی خود تداوم بخشند! البته اکثریت عمدة اعضای سازمان ملل که از نوکران ایالات متحد به شمار می‌روند مسلماً با پیشنهادات احمقانة گورکن‌ها موافقت خواهند کرد،‌ ولی می‌باید به منوچهر متکی، و همپالکی‌های‌اش در پاکستان و همچنین به رهبر فرزانه و دیگر ریزه خواران سازمان سیا که سال گذشته «اعلامیه حقوق بشر امام سجاد» به سازمان ملل تحویل داده‌اند، بگوئیم که این مسجد، واقعاً جای گوزیدن نیست! مباحث حقوقی با توضیح‌المسائل حاج روح‌الله و بحث‌های عمیق حوزة فقر فرهنگی تفاوت دارد. اینجا دیگر نمی‌توان مانند استاد سروش، با نشخوار ترهات «هابرماس» و «گیدنز»، به چرندبافی و جنجال پیرامون «دین عقلانی» و «قرآن الهامی» مشغول شد! اینجا دیگر نمی‌توان با سرودن اشعار بندتنبانی، آنهم به بهانة‌ دفاع از «حقوق زنان»، به طبل زدن برای «آفریدگار بزرگ» پرداخت و همه را به «بندگی خدا» دعوت کرد! اینجا دیگر نمی‌توان با تبدیل کودک به «نوغلام حسینی»،‌ از «حقوق بشر»‌ ویراستی «غلام‌بچگانه» ارائه داد! البته منوچهر متکی با این مسائل کاری ندارد، ایشان در مسیر نوکری و غلام‌بچگی گام برمی‌دارند، مأموراند و معذور. در نتیجه «هرچه استاد ازل گفت بگو، می‌گوید»، حتی اگر چرند و مهمل باشد:

« توهین به چهره‌ها و احساسات مذهبی باید از موارد نقض حقوق بشر به شمار آید.»

بله! ایشان می‌فرمایند، «توهین» به چهره‌ها و احساسات مذهبی! فقط باید پرسید که «توهین» چیست؟ و این «چهره‌ها» کیست‌اند؟ و به چه دلیل احساسات مذهبی اینچنین اهمیت پیدا کرده؟ مگر همة مردم جهان موظف‌اند مذهبی باشند؟

توهین، به زعم فعلة فاشیسم،‌ عبارت است از ساختن فیلم، نوشتن رمان و... در مورد شخصیت‌های مقدس و اسطوره‌ای ادیان ابراهیمی، به ویژه «قهرمانان» دین «مقدس» اسلام! و خلاصة مطلب، توهین عبارت است از «نزدیک شدن» به مقدسات، یا به سخره گرفتن آن‌ها. پیشتر به نقل از نظریة میکائیل باکتین، در مورد رمان به تفصیل گفتیم که «رمان»، از فروپاشی تقدس‌ها پدید آمده. همچنین گفتیم که «طنز» در رمان با شکستن مرز تقدس‌های حماسی و اسطوره‌ای ایجاد شد. و امروز اگر سازمان ملل، با نقض آشکار اعلامیة جهانی حقوق بشر به خواسته‌های غیرمستقیم حاکمیت ایالات متحد جنبة قانونی دهد، آزادی بیان در غرب نیز تهدید خواهد شد. خلاصه بگوئیم محافل فاشیسم بین‌الملل، جهت سرکوب ملت‌ها بازگشت به دوران شیرین «انکیزیسیون» کلیسائی را در دستور کار قرار داده‌اند.

یک میلیارد مسلمان در جهان وجود دارد، که حکومت‌های‌شان بدون استثناء افتخار نوکری سرمایه سالاری جهانی را دارند. گویا قرار شده در غرب فیلم بسازند، رمان بنویسند و کاریکاتور محمد بکشند، تا در سراسر امپراطوری نوکران آمریکا، فعلة فاشیسم از توهین به مقدسات‌شان خشمگین شده، به خیابان‌ها بریزند. به این ترتیب مطالبات مردم در پس پردة جنجال «توهین به مقدسات» مسکوت خواهد ماند. شرایط اسفبار کارگران، زنان و به طور کلی شرایط مردم ایران شاهدی است بر این مدعا. بله! اگر توتال، بریتیش پترولیوم و دیگران، به شیوخ رشوه می‌دهند و نفت ما را غارت می‌کنند، اگر کارگران ایران گروه، گروه اخراج می‌شوند، و معلمان ایران زیر خط فقر زندگی می‌کنند، اگر بانک مرکزی با افزایش بهرة پول مانع هرگونه تولید در داخل ‌شده، تا طبق ارقام گمرک، میزان واردات به 41 میلیارد دلار افزایش یابد، هیچ اشکالی ندارد! فقط غربی‌ها کاریکاتور محمد نکشند، و زن‌های ایرانی هم حجاب‌شان را رعایت کنند، چکمه هم نپوشند! چون سردار رادان نمی‌پسندند! در ضمن چهارشنبه سوری و نوروز را هم جشن نگیرند، چون تولید انبوه روضه خوان و مداح مهم‌ترین فعالیت فرهنگی گورکن‌ها به شمار می‌رود. آخرین برنامة فرهنگی حکومت اسلامی از عنوانی پرمعنا برخوردار است: «تربیت نوغلامان حسینی»! یعنی کسانی که از کودکی با «فقر فرهنگی اسلام» آشنا می‌شوند و آداب «غلامی»، «غلمانی»، «بندگی» و «نوکری» و نفس‌کش طلبی را از حاج منصورهای ارضی می‌آموزند، تا هریک به تنهائی توهینی باشند به انسانیت، تا هریک توهینی باشند به فرهنگ ملت ایران.

Ari (Fleischer, not Gold) teams with IMG

Interesting tidbit in today’s Sports Business Daily (subscription required) mentions that former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer (pictured) is joining IMG to form “a joint venture to provide media training, image management and crisis management for athletes, coaches, and team and league executives.” Ari Fleischer Sports Communications (AFSC) will be a “response to an increasingly competitive sports news environment,” according to Fleischer, who will serve as its President alongside COO and IMG Senior Corporate VP Sandy Montag.

AFSC will target individual athletes, sports team owners, team and league executives, coaches and other high-profile people who work in sports. “If someone has an issue they are wondering how to handle, they can seek advice when the dam has burst and the water is flowing and they are in trouble, or prior to it, so the dam never bursts,” commented Fleischer, who certainly has more experience in handling ‘burst dams’ (or bursting them himself; see Valerie Plame) than most. Said Montag: “We will offer [our services] to everyone inside and outside of IMG. We will operate it as a separate company.”

Is Fleischer’s AFSC filling a niche market? Hasn’t ‘crisis control’ long been a part of an agent’s, or more specifically, a publicist’s job already? And even if AFSC will allegedly be run ’separately’ from IMG, how many services for non-IMG clients will it truly be performing? Will outside agents and managers really entrust the handling of their clients’ woes to the management superpower when it could mean losing them entirely?

Who Is Your Sponsor?

Who is Your Sponsor? (WYS) describes itself as “the premier website for fans of all sports and entertainment to research and find out what type of gear, food or swag their favorite athletes and entertainers use and endorse.” So when someone recently asked me what the deal was with that goofy little worm (below left) adorning professional golfer Ernie Els’ shirtsleeves, after a quick search I was able to answer that the amusing and peculiar logo is indeed the trademark of Woodworm, a sports equipment and apparel company specializing in cricket that also has an emerging golf wear line.

WYS states that it is dedicated to becoming the preeminent source for sponsorships and endorsements. Additionally, the site features a forum where it hopes that athletes looking for sponsorships or endorsement opportunities will convene. But if nothing else, in the ever-changing landscape of sports and entertainment marketing and endorsement, WYS serves as a useful source to keep track of, and tabs on, the various brand portfolios of a wide array of global talent.

Want to be a wealthy celeb-athlete like BECKHAM?

Celebrity and soccer player, David Beckham has recently inked (another) endorsement deal; this time a two-year deal with permanent marker company, Sharpie. The deal was negotiated by BrandBuzz, NY, a division of Young & Rubicam Brands, a fully owned subsidiary of WPP Group plc. (WPP is the world's second-largest advertising and marketing conglomerate).

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it marks the largest global integrated campaign in Sharpie's history. The former Manchester United star will become the brand’s global ambassador and will star in a global marketing campaign supporting two of the brand's new products, the Ultrafine Retractable marker and the Sharpie Pen.

I know you’re asking, "What does David Beckham have to do with markers?" Well not much on the surface, but when you dig deeper you see that Sharpie is launching a global campaign and DB is a global icon. Beckham is the prime example of an athlete that has branded himself. This effort has paid off huge for DB as he has racked up sponsorship deals with Adidas, Georgio Armani, Pepsi, Motorola and Coty. These brands also love Beckham because he is a great vehicle for reaching their target market. The consumers that the aforementioned companies want to reach are the same people that identify with the David Beckham experience. If you are thinking, "How can I become as popular and rich as David Beckham?", then take note of the following 5 steps that every athlete that must follow for Beckham-like success. Agents pay attention, you may learn something too:

Step 1-Form a romantic relationship (marriage is ideal) with some one more famous than you (Marry up!). At the time when Beckham married Victoria "Posh Spice" Adams, Victoria was one of the most famous women in the world as a member of the Spice Girls.

Step 2-Improve your public speaking. DB does interviews and appears on TV all the time. Companies want endorsers and fans want celebrities that can communicate well. Think about how many more endorsements Shaq would have had if he didn't speak in a monotone.

Step 3—Serve your community. Become a humanitarian. Beckham has won awards for his service to the world. People and corporations love someone who gives back. Find a charity or organization that you can start supporting now! Also if you have been doing service, begin to make it public.

Step 4–Start an official website (and Myspace page). Beckham is a brand with a state of the art site where his fans can visit and discuss the life of Beckham. Take the next step from obscurity by getting people to talk about you in a controlled environment (a site you moderate). The point is to create a pull on the consumers that will subsequently get the attention of sponsors.

Step 5—Dress the part. Beckham is as recognized for his fashion sense as he is for scoring goals. Dwyane Wade was named as one of the world's best dressed men by both Esquire and GQ Magazine, and look at the wealth and fame that has accompanied young Flash.

Last but not least is skill. I did not list this as a step because it should be a prerequisite. Tiger, Beckham, Lebron, ARod, and Venus are arguably the top competitors in their respective sports and this plays a huge reason why everyone is infatuated with them. But if you are a young athlete or agent with something prove, let the branding process start now! Do not let the window of opportunity pass you by!

Of course becoming a megastar is more complicated than this but if you follow these steps I guarantee you will be off to a good start. In the words of my deceased neighbor Biggie Smalls, "Follow these rules you’ll have mad bread to break up."

All American Failure?

On August 6, 2006, I reported (with excitement) that there was a new football league sprouting up in college towns across the country called the All American Football League (AAFL).  At that point in time, people were wondering which new league idea would win out, the AAFL or the UFL, much like the old school debate of Beta vs. VHS.  The AAFL looked promising, with the expectation of high salaries in strong markets.

Then AAFL news took a hiatus for a while until major media outlets started picking up on its inaugural draft, which occurred earlier this year.  Through my position as Public Relations Director of the Entertainment and Sports Law Society at UF Law, I was invited to attend Team Florida’s first official draft and subsequent after party, where many players were getting very loose on the dance floor.  They were surely happy about their pending $50,000+ checks awaiting them at the start of the 2008 season.

But that happiness may need to be tabled for the time being.  ESPN news services reports that the AAFL may be forced to wait until 2009 for games to begin.  The first games of 2008 are supposed to start in April, but without a TV deal to broadcast AAFL games, the league’s backers, including CEO Marcus Katz, cannot afford to kickoff the inaugural season.  Is the AAFL already shaping up to be a failure like its USFL and XFL predecessors?  Are UFL backers pleased or worried by the news that the AAFL is having problems finding a TV entity to pick up its games?

Teaching Aid

As I have previously reported, Sports Agent Ricky Nixon at Flying Start has developed a Sports Agent Course that can be completed online. It’s a 12 week course, with weekly lectures that are run by Ricky Nixon, and include special guests.

Ricky’s course has been so popular that it has now been integrated into a university subject at Victoria University. [Show me the money, Ricky Nixon]

Not only that, Ricky is pushing for the course to be mandatory to be completed for all agents who represent players in the AFL. He believes that through proper education, smarter, ethical agents will be running the lives of our professional athletes.

What has been surprising is the amount of current footballers who are completing the course. Western Bulldogs player Brad Johnson has undertaken the study, and is considering being an agent after his career. With current players completing the course, this will allow them to improve how they are being represented.

Cricket Riches

So now the IPL auction is over and players are at their teams. As we saw Indian cricket captain MS Dhoni will be paid the richly sum of $1.5 million for competing for about a month and a half. To put this on a comparative scale, Dhoni would earn US$12 million for a year, putting him in the same league as top earners in basketball and soccer.

But could this figure have been more? The IPL was set with a salary cap of $5 million, thus the bids for players had to be chosen wisely by teams. The question that is asked is that if there was no salary cap in place, would the figures of the circketers have been more or less? Competitive forces would have kicked into place and I think the figure could have been much higher.

If the IPL turns out to a success, will the salary cap increase, and more importantly, will cricketers become the highest paid athletes in the world? [Will cricket outpay soccer?]

Mayweather ready to rumble

Floyd Mayweather Jr. has accomplished a lot in boxing, he’s even been on Dancing with the Stars, and now he’s adding another accomplishment to his resume. On March 30, in Florida, Floyd will be competing in Wrestlemania XXIV. And Mayweather will get $20 million for one match: against the Big Show. [Mayweather to get $20 million to wrestle]

Mayweather will receive the same amount he normally gets for boxing fights, and I think I can see why WWE chose the move.

Wrestling’s big events are a staple on pay-per-view, as are boxing. What the WWE are trying to do is bring fans of boxing over to WWE.

The WWE don’t only see Mayweather as a fighter, but will realize the potential of him as a ‘brand’. It will be no surprise to see shirts, posters and other merchandise being available of the fighter.

Show me the…friendship?

As reported earlier Randy Moss re-signed with the New England Patriots for a further 3 years. Randy’s agent, Tim DiPiero believes he could have got more money. But Randy wasn’t all about the money. It was the relationships he created with the people at the team. [Patriots ‘intangibles’ helped Moss make his decision to stay]

As Randy’s agent explains, sometimes people lose sight of the value of non-monetary factors.

“Oftentimes, when people judge whether a contract is a success, they look at how much it’s worth. But there is more to life than just pure money,” DiPiero said, according to The Globe. “In this case, Randy experienced some intangibles during the year, from his friendships, to his relationship with the coaching staff and others in the organization. Those intangibles had some value here.”

As ESPN further explains, Randy and coach Bill Belicheck had developed a mutual respect who are both heading towards a mutual goal.

Midweek NFL Contract Rundown

This week has been nothing other than full of big NFL team moves. Instead of covering them all, I am providing some of the contracts that stuck out the most to me. See below.

• Madieu Williams signed a 6-year, $33 million with the Minnesota Vikings, making him one of the highest-paid safeties in the NFL. Wait, who? I consider myself to be a pretty big football fan. To pay a guy that I have never even heard of one of the highest paid contracts for his position seems like something only the Vikings organization would do. I guess it makes sense then.
• The Cleveland Brows signed former #3 receiver on the Patriots, Donte Stallworth to a 7-year $35 million deal. Seems like quite a bit for a guy who has been overshadowed by a guy like former Gator wide receiver, Jabar Gaffney, who appeared lower on New England’s depth chart. Although, the deal seems low, if compared to the Vikings deal listed above.
• Apparently, teams are impressed with Cincinnati’s 2007 defensive lineup. The San Francisco 49ers just inked DE Justin Smith to a 6-year, $45 million contract. The guy was a high draft pick and has been consistently solid in the NFL. Looks like a good deal for both sides.
• The Falcons dropped Dunn and picked up former San Diego Chargers backup, Michael Turner. The deal is for another term of 6-years, paying a total of $34.5 million ($15 million guaranteed). Personally, I feel like it is a lot of money to pay a guy who has not yet proven his ability to take a majority of a team’s snaps in the backfield. If he does not perform up to expectations, he could always be cut, so his agent did a nice job of squeaking that $15 million guarantee in there.
• At 26-years-old, Ben Roethlisberger is looking to play for the Steelers well into his 30s. Pittsburgh agreed with his agents on an 8-year, $102 million contract. The real eye catcher is the $36 million guaranteed, eclipsing Peyton Manning’s guarantee in his deal.
• Alan Faneca is the highest paid O-Lineman after the Jets gave him a 5-year, $40 million deal. $21 million of it is guaranteed. Not bad for a guy that many would place out of his prime, at the age of 31-years-old.
• Oh, and some guy named Randy Moss is sticking it out with the Patriots after signing a 3-year, $27 million deal. Good call, Schackman.

ObamaCycle: A Craigslist for Obama Campaigners

One of the definitive aspects of the 2008 presidential campaign has been its uber-participatory nature.

From historically high turnout levels at the polls to voters posing questions directly to the presidential candidates through YouTube or through instant messenger, there's never been an election that's been quite like this. 

There's a heightened sense among some voters in the battleground states that their choices really matter, and that they really can shape the future direction that their country takes. That's the sense I've been getting from several interviews that I've conducted with voters in Ohio and Texas for a developing story.

One result of this is the birth and proliferation of cool new ideas on the virtual campaign trail.

Citizens are not only changing the way that debates operate, or using new applications to build support and to create publicity for their candidate, but they're also constantly thinking up new ways to help each other in mundane matters that can make a difference.   

The latest example is a web site by Furqan Nazeeri, an entrepreneur working just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. He's created ObamaCycle, a  new social networking site that enables the supporters of Illinois senator Barack Obama  to re-cycle their campaign materials.

It might not sound like much, but apparently there's a long backlog for these kinds of materials at the online stores, and there's a great demand for them. Nazeeri used Ning -- a free application on the web that enables communities to instantly create their own social networks.
